Oughtibridge to Deepcar
4.5 miles/7.25 km
Overview
The Don tumbles along its rocky bed through the deep tree-lined valley between Oughtibridge and Deepcar. It’s mainly unseen and unvisited. This is one of the longest stretches of river in the region to have virtually no public access other than for fishing and is also one of the most beautiful and unspoilt.
At the moment, there is not an official right of way along this section. The Upper Don Trail Trust is working hard to change that. We hope we’re close to some significant breakthroughs and we you can receive updates if you sign up to our newsletter.
In the meantime, we suggest a more roundabout but mainly off-road route, although initially via Station Lane -take care – then to join the Trans Pennine Trail through Wharncliffe Woods which is also suitable for horse riding.
Approaching Deepcar, there are two options – either continuing along the Trans Pennine Trail following the main Upper Don Valley to historic Wortley Forge and Penistone, or picking up the Little Don Trail at Deepcar and on to Stocksbridge and Langsett.
